It is estimated that more than 50% of adolescent athletes will sustain a concussion by the time they graduate, and with advancements in science we now know the importance of protecting the brain, especially in contact sports.
Valir Health’s Concussion Management Program partners with middle and high schools in and around the Oklahoma City metro to provide complimentary, onsite concussion balance baseline screenings for their athletes prior to injury, using mobile assessment equipment and technology. If the athlete suffers a concussion within the year, the baseline screening information can be compared to post-injury results, this comparison is important for medical staff in determining when the athlete can safely resume sports activities.
With 41% of athletes returning to play too soon, education and prevention is paramount. Valir’s physical therapists, and athletic trainers who serve in schools within the Valir communities, were finding that there were limited resources available to provide an objective measurement that could support during the return to play and learn decisions. The Valir Concussion Management Program fills that gap for both the school and medical teams.
As a leader in rehabilitation for brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, Valir Health felt compelled to contribute. With the help of Biodex technologies and Concussion Health, our program assists medical professionals by providing information needed to prevent premature return to play and return to learn decisions. In addition, as Certified Concussion Health Providers, if an athlete requires treatment following a concussion, Valir Health has the resources available to provide therapy to those athletes. Valir feels a responsibility to give back within the communities we serve, providing free health assessment and education to young athletes sets them up for a healthier future.
Valir Physical Therapy has a new commercial on Fox25 featuring our baseline concussion management screening. Check it out by clicking here.
